Tiny House

Man converted storage silo into a beautiful 2-bedroom home — see inside

Imagine driving along scenic Highway 50 toward Elmdale, then turning west and leaving the noise of everyday life behind. In less than 90 minutes, you find yourself surrounded by the quiet, untouched beauty of rural Kansas.

The sound of rustling leaves replaces traffic, the night sky stretches wide and clear above you, and a peaceful stillness settles in — the kind that’s hard to find in modern life.

Hidden deep in West Chase County, surrounded by rolling soybean fields and nestled within a gentle creek valley, sits a truly unique retreat known as the Owl’s Nest Silo House.

This isn’t just another rental — it’s a carefully crafted escape. Built in 2019, the structure blends the charm of a log cabin with the unexpected character of a converted silo, creating a space that feels both cozy and one-of-a-kind.

The vision behind this special place belongs to Gerald Wiens, who originally planned to create a simple log cabin getaway for occasional weekend rentals.

“We decided that we were going to build a log cabin and rent it out for weekends, hopefully like Airbnb. We thought just a couple weekends a month,” he explained.

But what started as a modest idea quickly grew into something far more memorable — a destination that offers guests not just a place to stay, but an experience of peace, creativity, and connection to nature.

What Gerald didn’t expect was just how popular his first rental would become. During the pandemic, the nearby Paw Print Cabin was booked for more than 180 nights, revealing a huge demand for peaceful, secluded getaways.

Not far from that cabin stood an old grain silo, weathered by time but still in remarkably good condition. Instead of seeing it as just another farm structure, Gerald saw possibility.

With imagination, sketches, small models, and countless floor plan ideas, he began exploring how the silo could be transformed into a truly livable space. It wasn’t a simple project. The circular shape made planning much more difficult than a traditional cabin or home, requiring creative solutions at every stage.

“That’s basically what happened. And then, you know, we just looked at many ideas. We had little models drawn. We had different floor plans,” Gerald explained, according to KSN.

What emerged from that vision was something extraordinary — a four-level retreat rising 45 feet into the air, unlike anything most people would ever expect to call home.

Step inside, and the silo immediately reveals its charm. The entryway opens into a warm and distinctive circular living room, creating an intimate and cozy atmosphere that feels both unusual and inviting. It’s the kind of space designed not just for staying, but for truly relaxing and enjoying the experience.

One of the first details to catch your eye is the pair of plush leather chairs, perfectly placed to create a cozy setting for quiet conversation, morning coffee, or peaceful moments of reflection.

For those looking to relax indoors, the space also includes a modern flat-screen TV, thoughtfully mounted above a stunning stone-framed gas fireplace that instantly becomes the heart of the room.

Whether you’re settling in for a movie night, enjoying the soft glow of the fire, or simply unwinding after a day spent outdoors, this beautifully designed living area offers the perfect balance of comfort, warmth, and rustic charm.

Adding to the home’s thoughtful design, a discreet half bathroom is cleverly tucked beneath the winding staircase, making smart use of the available space without disrupting the beauty of the interior. It’s a practical touch that ensures guests have easy access to essentials while still enjoying the comfort and coziness of the main living area.

But one of the most memorable parts of the Owl’s Nest Silo House is the journey upward. To reach the impressive fourth-floor master bedroom, guests climb a winding staircase of 45 steps, slowly ascending through the heart of the silo.

That climb is more than just a way to get upstairs — it adds to the experience, building a sense of anticipation as you make your way toward the most elevated and private part of this remarkable retreat.

For anyone interested in experiencing this peaceful getaway for themselves, the nearby log cabin is already listed on Airbnb under “Vacation Rentals Chase County,” and the unique silo vacation rental is expected to be available soon as well.

For travelers looking for something far beyond the ordinary, this one-of-a-kind retreat offers the chance to enjoy comfort, creativity, and countryside serenity all in one unforgettable stay.

“To say it’s been a labor of love, I mean, we spent so much time here. If you had to pay me to do this, I’d hate to say how many hours it took because it’s not your typical construction,” said Gerald.
