Tiny House

Man converted storage silo into a beautiful 2-bedroom home — see inside

Imagine driving along scenic Highway 50 toward Elmdale, Kansas, then turning west and leaving the noise of everyday life behind. In less than 90 minutes, the landscape opens into rolling fields, quiet creek valleys, and a kind of peace that feels almost forgotten. The air is still, the leaves rustle softly, and at night, the sky stretches wide and clear above you.

Tucked deep in the heart of West Chase County, surrounded by soybean fields and natural beauty, stands one of the most unique vacation rentals you’ll ever see: the Owl’s Nest Silo House. What was once an old farm silo has been transformed into a breathtaking getaway unlike anything else in the Kansas countryside.

The man behind this creative project is Gerald Wiens, who originally built a nearby log cabin in 2019 as a simple weekend rental. At first, he expected it to be booked only a few weekends each month. But when demand exploded during the pandemic, with the nearby Paw Print Cabin rented for more than 180 nights, Gerald realized there was room for something even more special.

That’s when his attention turned to the old silo standing nearby.

The structure was still in great condition, and instead of letting it remain just another forgotten farm relic, Gerald saw possibility. With sketches, models, floor-plan ideas, and plenty of imagination, he began the challenging process of turning the circular tower into a fully livable home. Designing inside a round structure wasn’t easy, but the result was worth every bit of effort.

Today, the silo stands as a 45-foot-tall, four-floor vacation retreat, blending rustic charm with clever architectural design. Inside, the entryway opens into a cozy circular living room that immediately feels warm, intimate, and inviting. Every level of the home has been thoughtfully designed to make the most of the unusual shape, creating a one-of-a-kind stay that feels both adventurous and comfortable.

This incredible transformation proves that with enough vision, even an old farm silo can become a beautiful escape filled with charm, creativity, and unforgettable character.

Immediately drawing your attention are two plush leather chairs, thoughtfully placed to invite quiet reflection or warm, meaningful conversations. The space feels intimate and grounded, perfectly suited for slowing down and soaking in the peaceful surroundings.

For moments of entertainment, a modern flat-screen TV is elegantly mounted above a stunning stone-framed gas fireplace. Whether you’re settling in for a cozy movie night or simply enjoying the soft glow and gentle warmth of the fire, this living area creates the perfect balance of comfort and relaxation.

And, not to forget practicality, cleverly tucked under the winding staircase is a discreet half bathroom. This space-saving design ensures that guests don’t have to venture far for amenities, even when ensconced in the comforts of the living room.

Moreover, the Owl’s Nest Silo House offers an extraordinary journey to the pinnacle of comfort. To reach the grandeur of the fourth-floor master bedroom, you embark on a captivating ascent of 45 stairs, winding their way up.

For those interested in experiencing it for themselves, the nearby log cabin is already available on Airbnb under “Vacation Rentals Chase County,” and the incredible silo house is expected to join the rental lineup soon.
